It’s Birchbox time!
Birchbox is one of those staples of subscription boxes, and a very good “intro box,” into this addicting world. The products are very random, but generalized enough to where they can suit a variety of tastes. There are several different versions of birchbox. For the price it’s an excellent way to get introduced to new brands and products you may not otherwise find or buy.
$10 a month – Free Shipping!
*Ships via newgistics, takes 3-6 days to arrive. Time of month varies.
Easily the best thing about Birchbox is the points program. You get points for starting a subscription, then 10 points for every product review you do on their site. 100 points = $10 in their shop, and the products are all full sized. You get 10 pts per item if you review it. The Nexxus set below counts for 30 points, as an example. If someone purchases a subscription through your referral link, the referer gets 100 points! Birchbox’s points program is incredibly generous, you gotta admit. Their shop has tons of products too.
Each Birchbox contains 4-5 products, usually sample size but randomly you’ll get a full size. This month, Birchbox teamed up with Kate Spade Saturday, who designed the inside cover of the box and offered a $25 off $75 coupon. Her stuff clearly leans more toward geometric, and a good chunk of it is uniquely designed, but that coupon code isn’t going to go very far if you catch my drift.
Each Birchbox contains an info card detailing the months items, their color or scent (that’s not always written on the sample), and their total retail value for the full size item. This months box also contained an infographic on the importance of sunscreen, which Birchbox will send you a lot of.
Gilchrist & Soams Spa Therapy Sea Fennel Body Lotion – Full Size $15
This stuff smells very strongly of cucumbers. You know that huge cucumber melon kick every lotion/body wash manufacturer was obsessed with back in the late 90’s-early 00’s? This is highly reminiscent of that. It seemed to work like any other lotion, nothing particularly special.
Whish Shave Crave Shaving Cream – Acai Grapefruit – Full Size $20
Personally I don’t use shaving cream because my razor is electric. This does smell good but has the consistency of a thin lotion, but if you’re into that sort of thing I imagine it’d work pretty well.
PIXI beauty shea butter lip balm – Coral Crush – Full Size $8
Funfact: I’ve always wanted to try PIXI but it tends to be one of those brands you can’t easily find. I was so thrilled when I saw it was in my box this month! There’s something in this balm that smells incredibly sweet (probably the butter), and the color is just perfect for my skintone. I absolutely love the way it feels too, I want this entire line now, my poor wallet. At least I can order them from the Birchbox shop? Hah. It goes on very easy, and it definitely adds a lot of color.
32 Oral Care Effervescent Breath Crystals – Full Size $10-30
I’m actually really scared to use these. The instructions say to “Put them in your mouth and swish with saliva to freshen your breath,” which honestly sounds like an invitation to “burn the ever loving hell out of my mouth with minty goodness.” Good idea, unfortunate execution.
Nexxus Color Assure Pre-Wash Primer, Shampoo & Conditioner – Full Size $11-18
Birchbox lists all of these separately in their shop which is why they’re linked this way.
Something as simple as shampooing your hair has a primer now? Primers seem to have exploded on the market in the last decade or so, so I guess this isn’t too surprising. How cute is this packaging? This is branding and marketing done right. Nexxus is a salon staple that’s been around for years. I almost don’t want to use this as it would make an excellent stocking stuffer. Plus the packaging is so cute! I have incredibly odd priorities, I’m aware.
This is my third ever Birchbox and they seem to just keep getting better. I really love this one despite the breath mints, lotion and shaving cream being duds. Ah well, if interested, Birchbox is $10 a month. There’s a men’s variant for $20.
